Big Island dancers Sonja Giardina and Heidi Lee Hart were recently photographed at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for Dance Across the USA.
Giardina, a freshman at Hilo High School, trains more than 10 hours a week in ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, ballroom and hip hop with Center Stage Dance Alliance. Hart, a professional entertainer in Kona, has a bachelor’s degree in dance from Point Park University. She performs on cruise ships and Japan tours and is an emcee with Island Breeze Hawaii and Tihati Productions.
Giardina and Hart were photographed at the national park by Jonathan Givens of Entertainment Photography Specialists. During a 90-day road trip, Givens will travel more than 22,000 miles to 56 locations in the contiguous United State, Alaska and Hawaii, visiting national parks, national historic locations and state parks to photograph the 150 Dance Across the USA finalists, who were chosen from more than 2,800 entries.
“We believe that by photographing talented dancers in these nationally significant locations, we will both increase the interest in dance, as well as expose people to the accessibility and majesty of our country,” said Givens, who plans to use the captured images to create a book.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the national parks and National Endowment for the Arts.
